The Raccoon
Tennessee's state animal is the raccoon. They picked the raccoon in 1971. "Raccoon" is derived from the Algonquian Indian word "aroughcoune," it means "He who scratches his hands". Raccoon were hunted a lot in earlier times for hats, coats, and shoes.
Flag: The three stars on the flag represent the three different land forms in Tennessee. Mountains in the east, highlands in the middle and lowlands in the west. On the flag these regions are bound together in an unbroken circle. The field is crimson with a blue background for the stars. The final blue strip relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag from showing too much crimson when it is limp.

GooGoos and Moon Pies
Tennessee is known for salty country ham, fluffy biscuits, grits, and red-eye gravy as well as two confections with unusual names- GooGoos and moon pies. The GooGoo Cluster, made by the stranded Candy Company in Nashville, Tennessee. The moon pie comes from Chattanooga has been around since 1917. It consists of a layer of marshmallow sandwiched between two cookies and its dipped in chocolate, vanilla, or banana coating.
